Figure skating: not a common pathway — but a real one.
NCAA varsity figure skating exists at only a small number of universities (University of Delaware, Boston University, Miami University, University of Colorado Colorado Springs). However, figure skating is a proven admissions pathway to the world's top universities through club skating programmes.
- · Nathan Chen — Olympic gold medallist (Beijing 2022), Yale University then Harvard Medical School
- · Kevin Shum — 2x US Collegiate National Champion, MIT (Computer Science)
- · Camden Pulkinen — Team USA, world record holder, Columbia University
- · Caitlyn — competitive national skater, Harvard University (Pre-Med)
- · Meryl Davis & Charlie White — Olympic ice dance champions, University of Michigan
These skaters attended Yale, MIT, Harvard, and Columbia through club skating — not NCAA varsity athletic scholarships. The skating was the admissions differentiator alongside strong academics.
NovaX advises on two routes: (1) the rare NCAA varsity pathway at Delaware / BU, and (2) the admissions-hook pathway to Ivy League and top universities through competitive skating combined with strong academics.
Important sport notes every family should hear.
Not an NCAA-sanctioned sport (dropped 2009). NovaX advises on alternative routes: NAIA club teams + academic merit scholarships at schools with competitive badminton programmes.
No athletic scholarships — but total financial support through academic aid can exceed a D-I partial scholarship. NovaX advises on the full financial picture.
